If you have just moved to Exeter, you might be feeling a little lost and unsure what there is to get up to during your time at university. But do not worry, we have got you!
Here is a list of the 15 things you need to try before you graduate…
1. Go to the Ram
Only a stone’s throw from campus accommodation, the Ram is the University’s student bar, located in Devonshire House. Whether you want to meet up with friends for a cheap pint, or need some mid-deadline stress relief, the Ram is the perfect place to go throughout your time at Uni. Whilst you are there, order some of their legendary curly fries – you will not regret it!
2. Visit the Cathedral
Exeter Cathedral is in the centre of town and, dating back 900 years, it is one of Exeter’s top tourist attractions. Come along to see its beautiful architecture, or simply pack a picnic, grab a book, and sit on Cathedral Green when the sun is shining.
3. Have dinner at The Old Firehouse
This is one of the staple places to go in Exeter and is loved by pretty much every student at the university for their incredible 14” pizzas. Not only this, but they have a variety of ales and ciders, all housed within a beautiful and rustic pub just off the high street.
4. Go to the Tar Barrels of Ottery St Mary
This is certainly one of the strangest of things to see at university, but you definitely won’t want to miss it. On November 5 each year, the years-old Flaming Tar Barrel tradition takes place about 10 miles east of Exeter, where burning barrels are carried through the streets for bonfire night.
5. Attend a Society Ball
Every year societies will hold their annual Christmas and Spring society balls where you have the chance to dress up for some unforgettable black-tie events. Even better, many of our society balls are hosted at the beautiful Reed Hall that is located on our Streatham Campus. This is a great opportunity to go with friends, take some photos, and dance the night away.
6. Go to the Imperial
As one of the biggest Wetherspoons in the country, the Imperial – also known as the Impy – is the perfect place for cheap drinks in a stunning setting. Its huge pub garden is certainly a student hotspot when the sun is shining!

Head down to Sandy Park to experience 80 minutes of the former European Champions playing at the home of rugby in the Southwest.
8. Watch a performance at Northcott Theatre

Even if you have not been to the theatre very much, this is a great chance for you to try something new and see one of their incredible shows. You can often get a student discount on tickets too!
9. Head down to Exmouth for a day at the beach
As soon as the sun shines in Exeter, you will see trainloads of students hurrying to Exmouth for a day by the sea. Bring a picnic or grab some fish & chips when you are there for an unforgettable day out with your friends.

Whether you want to play sport competitively, or you are just looking to have some fun, joining a sports team is a fantastic way to keep fit in an enjoyable and social way. All students can join Intramural sport on campus, with teams that represent student halls, academic subjects, and societies. This is a great way to meet new people and get involved with some friendly competition during your studies!
11. Explore the beauty of Streatham campus
Described by the Times as the ‘best-gardened campus in Britain,’ our Streatham Campus is worth a tour during your time at the university.
