5 reasons you should join a society this year

Studying can sometimes be dull, but then sitting on your phone for hours and hours after makes you feel like you’ve wasted your time. Joining a society, in my opinion, is the sweet spot to combat the occasional dread and unproductiveness of everyday uni life. I’m Aanya, a first-year medical student and today I will be giving you 5 reasons why you should join a society this year!

Before we begin, you may bethinking,

“But I didn’t join any during fresher’s week”... with societies it’s never too late and you can still join some now in Term 2!

1.     Commit to new year's resolutions or life goals.

You might be like me and set new year’s resolutions every year and then forget they exist early on in the year. Or you have overarching life goals for yourself, but you still haven’t started working towards them. What better way to integrate working towards them than to join a society related to them. There are over 300 societies so there is a very high chance that the society helps you with working towards your goals and improving yourself! Since societies tend to have regular events too, it makes sure you’re on track at university.

2.     Make connections for life.

Meeting new people is one of the BIGGEST reasons why you should join a society. You never know who could end up becoming your friends for life. There are so many people who have met their best friends, partners, and networking connections at university societies. You’ll end up meeting the society members a lot too and it ends up becoming a family! I’ve met so many wonderful people from societies and it is so nice to socialise outside of your accommodation or your course and meet people with similar interests or backgrounds.

3.     Work hard, play hard.

To truly make the most of your university experience, it is crucial to have a balance with academics. Studying all day can be so tiring and draining and a way to feel energetic again can be through societies! After a long day of being cooped up in your room, doing sports or spending time doing something you enjoy is the most perfect way to unwind. Societies are fun – whether that be the social aspect that you enjoy or the activity itself that you’re participating in!

4.     Improve prospects.

Being a part of a society for long periods of time can demonstrate your dedication and commitment to future employers. Societies are an excellent addition to CVs or LinkedIn and can show your skills. Society committee roles can also highlight your confidence with team work as well as leadership skills! All in all, there’s no loss to your future career either with joining societies.

5.     Create long-lasting memories.

When you look back on your time at university, it’s unlikely your first thought would be studying for hours and hours. What you’re more likely to think of when you reminisce is memories made at university through societies for example. Whether it be a time where you had lots of fun or whether it be a funny/embarrassing time, societies can help you build these experiences!

Anyways, I hope I have encouraged you to join some societies or at least convinced you to have a look what’s out there. Thank you for reading - Aanya :)
