A Home Away from Home: Places to visit in Exeter

Being away from home can be exhilarating, challenging and require some major adjustments, especially when you are navigating a new environment with a completely different culture. Finding places that provide services catered to your specific needs like hair care, finding ingredients to make traditional meals, or even a community of people you relate to, can make a massive difference in feeling settled in what is now your new “home”. But does Exeter have the answers to all your worries and become your home away from home? Yes, it can! Exeter is home to several barbershops and mini supermarkets that cater to the diverse community!

In this mini guide, I will introduce you to some local spots that will help make your time in Exeter feel a bit more like home. From barbers who work with textured hair to grocery stores offering traditional ingredients, these businesses adequately serve the needs of ethnic students and help create a welcoming experience.

4.  Mesopotamia – International Flavours at Your Doorstep

Another suitable place for stocking up on familiar ingredients is Mesopotamia. Right in the centre of Exeter, this store specialises in providing international and African/Caribbean ingredients, helping you find those hard-to-get products from home. From plantains to seasonings, you will be able to create those warm hearty meals that keep you warm during these frosty winter months.

Location: 35 Sidwell Street, Exeter

Although Exeter does not yet have a lot of stores or salons specifically tailored to the needs of ethnic students, these small local businesses can make a massive difference in helping you feel more at home. Also, fret not. The city’s diversity is growing year on year so expect the amount of culturally inclusive spaces to grow.

You are not alone in this journey. There is a growing community of students who share similar experiences, challenges, and enjoyments and mishaps. Connect with them through societies like the African and Caribbean Society, the Student of Colour Association, and the Multicultural Society. Societies like these will help you find a community of people who understand what it is like to be far from home, and most importantly who can offer support, advice, and friendship.
