Your Essential Checklist

What to pack, where you need to go, registering for University and finances – you might feel like you have a long to-do list when you start uni! We’ve got a handy checklist for you, covering some of the things you might not have considered about getting to grips with student life.

We have a more tailored International Student Guide from one of our students Remie where you can find some additional information about coming to Exeter as an international student.

1. Register with a GP

You never know when you might get ill, so it’s best to get registered with a doctor’s surgery as soon as you get to Exeter. You can register with the Student Health Centre, or find your nearest GP.

2. Register with a dentist

Make sure you’re also registered with a dentist so that you can access dental care when you need it.

3. Complete your University registration.

This is important to make sure you can receive your student loan, and receive most communications from us, the University and your course and faculty. You’ll need to register before the start of every academic year.

4. Download the iExeter app.

Once you’ve got your university email, you can download the iExeter app, giving you access to your timetable, available study spaces, and more!

5. Set up your student bank account.

A student bank account is a good idea for your time at uni – not least because there are some great deals out there! Read this comparison about what’s on offer from Save the Student before you sign up.

6. Get to know your local area.

If you’re moving into University accommodation, make a note of what facilities you have available, like washing machines, and your nearest shop and pharmacy for supplies. Exeter has multiple train stations - Exeter Central is closest to the city centre, but more services from other parts of the UK come into Exeter St Davids, which is closer to Streatham campus.

7. Learn to cook a few meals.

Practice a few simple meals and cook for others before you come to uni; and then you’ll be able to impress your new housemates by whipping up some delicious and easy recipes! Look at our student created Community Cookbook for some inspiration.

8. Get a library tour

See these 10 tips to get you started at the Library, and there will also be tours of the libraries and study spaces on both Streatham and St Luke’s when you get to Exeter.

9. Check in on yourself.

Looking after your mental health and wellbeing is so important, and taking time for self-care is essential whilst you are studying.  University Wellbeing have loads of guides and resources, as well as appointments if you need to speak to someone. We’ve got a Wellbeing Hub giving guidance and support on issues including loneliness, stress and anxiety, alcohol and drug support and more.

10. Look for part-time work

If you’re planning on getting a part-time job whilst you’re studying; sign up to Handshake and take a look at vacancies! The Career Zone are here to help you. Follow us on Instagram for paid opportunities too!
