Creative Exhibition for LGBTQ+ History Month

To celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, we're collaborating with LGBTQ+ Society, RAZZ Magazine, Art Society, and Design Society to host a Creative Exhibition!

Event details:

Date: 27 February 2025

Time: 9:30 - 16:30 (drop by anytime to look at the submissions)

Location: The Greenhouse, Devonshire House (Streatham)

More information can be found here.

In the evening, we'll also be hosting a social event for people to come along to look at pieces together, chat, and hopefully hear from some of the artists/writers about their work. There will be some food and drinks provided, so please book a free ticket if you're planning to come so we can order enough refreshments.

How to submit your work for the exhibition:

** Submission Deadline: 20 February 2025. The submission forms are linked below! **

Submissions are open to anyone that identifies as LGBTQ+, or are an ally to the community.

This year, the national theme for LGBTQ+ History Month is 'Activism and Social Change'. You can choose to create something that fits into this theme if you would like to, but it's not essential. You can explore a more personal themes of queer identity in your pieces if you’d like to. If you need some help coming up with an idea, you can contact us and we can help you. You can also use these suggestion as a starting point - “How can the act of creating amplify LGBTQ+ voices/rights?”.

Art History

Design society are planning an art history section, looking at historical and contemporary artists and providing information. If you would be interested in helping them with this section, please get in contact with them through Instagram or via email: designsoc@groups.exeterguild.com

Written content

** Submission form - RAZZ LGBTQ+ History Month Exhibition Content Call 27/01/25 **

If you're interested in submitting a written piece, you can do this through RAZZ Magazine. They’ll be able to offer you support with grammar and editing (time allowing), with your piece being able to be:

  • article/non-fiction piece (500 words max)
  • short story (500 words)
  • flash fiction (250 words)
  • poem (20 lines)

There is also space for more academic or personal articles, such as discussing queer representation in film, that you may be interested in. There are suggested prompted within the submission form.

Visual Art

** Submission form - https://forms.gle/MxKRCMb4YgCXYGyu7 **

If you're interested in submitting a visual art piece, these pieces can be pretty much anything you think would be relevant. Whether it's a painting, photography, sculpture, comic - you can choose! We ask that paintings and framed works be now bigger than A1.

Content Warnings

For heavy topics like mental health, we ask that you preface your piece with a content warning. When it comes to things like graphic/excessive depictions of violence/gore, we ask that you avoid them, unless you feel that it’s vital to the piece (especially if it is to do with history). We ask that you also avoid graphic sexual content as well, though we understand that the line for this can be hazy. We’ll deliberate together on pieces with these elements but hold the right to decline pieces of this nature. Homophobia and transphobia are also explicitly prohibited.

For visual art or pieces where you’re producing something physical yourself, you can sign-up by the deadline and not have your piece entirely done yet. We’d just ask that you drop off your piece with us (Guild reception - first floor of Devonshire House, Streatham) on the 26 February. For everything else, the deadline is to make sure we have everything printed (especially writing and photography) and ready for the exhibition.

If you have any questions, feel free to get in contact with us at the Guild, or email Thomas, the Communities & Equality Officer, at thomas.tran@exeterguild.com
