Are your friendships falling apart?

Friendships are one of the best parts of being at university, but they can also hit rough patches. If you’re feeling like a friendship is drifting or falling apart, you’re not alone – it happens to many of us. Here are some practical steps to help you navigate this tricky situation:

#1 Start with a chat

If something feels off, talk about it. A simple, calm conversation can go a long way. Try saying, “I feel like we haven’t been as close lately – is everything okay?” Listening to each other can make all the difference.

#2 Plan something fun together

Sometimes, life gets in the way, and it’s easy to feel distant. Why not suggest a catch-up over coffee, a movie night, or a visit to a campus event? The Guild runs loads of activities and Give It a Go sessions designed for you to relax and try something new – you can even meet new people! Spending time together doing something fun could help bring back the spark.

#3 Reflect on what’s happening

Take a step back and think about the situation. Is the tension coming from something specific, like stress or misunderstandings? Or is the friendship naturally shifting? Sometimes, life gets busy, and it’s not about you.

#4 Set healthy boundaries

If things feel one-sided or overwhelming, it’s okay to step back and set boundaries. Friendships should make you feel supported, not drained. Communicate honestly about what you need – you deserve that balance.

#5 Reach out for support

You don’t have to figure it all out alone. If you’re struggling, we’re here to help:

  • Advice service: For free, impartial advice on everything from housing to wellbeing.
  • Wellbeing hub: Resources, workshops, and events designed to support your mental health.
  • Peer support groups: Connect with others who might be going through something similar.

#6 Know it’s okay to let go

Sometimes, friendships naturally come to an end, and that’s okay. Focus on the good memories and be open to building new connections. University is full of opportunities to meet new people – societies, events, and meetups are great places to start.

You’re not alone

Friendship challenges are tough, but they’re also a chance to learn and grow. Whether it’s working through the problem or moving on, take it one step at a time. And remember – we’re always here to support you. Need more advice or just someone to talk to? Reach out to the Guild’s Advice Team here. We’ve got your back.
