Changemaker
Streatham Campus

Hi, I’m Kirsty, Social Publicity Secretary for Be the Change Society—a student-led movement focused on sustainability campaigning. Right now, our mission is clear: make the University more environmentally friendly and inspire students to take action

My Focus Project

Campaigning to make campus and her community more sustainable– because every small action adds up.

Who are you and what’s your big idea?

What made you go for it?

As a Geography student, I care deeply about sustainability. But beyond academics, the climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges we face. Even small changes—whether on campus or in our daily habits—can create a ripple effect, inspiring more people to take action and amplify the impact.

What’s been your “YES! I did that” moment so far?

One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been Sustainable Sundays—our initiative to raise awareness about environmental issues and community projects.

Seeing students engage with our posts, attend events, and take real action shows that the message is spreading.

Why does this matter to students?

Beyond sustainability, this work has helped build a strong community. Through collaborations—like our event with the Open Water Swimming Society—we’ve brought students together over a shared passion for the environment. It’s about more than activism—it’s about friendships, shared experiences, and a collective movement toward change.

What’s one thing that surprised you on this journey?

One thing that shocked me is just how much influence we actually have. Right now, we’re working with societies to change their stash suppliers to more ethical and sustainable options.

Seeing real, tangible change come from our efforts has been incredibly empowering.

What’s your top tip for any student who wants to create change?

There are so many opportunities—whether through Be the Change Society or other University initiatives. Sometimes, all it takes is attending one event to spark a bigger journey. Take that first step—you never know how much of an impact you could have.

Sum up your journey in three words.

If your changemaker journey had a theme song, what would it be?
