Why you should stand in the student elections?

Are you passionate about making a difference on campus? Do you want to help shape your university experience and represent your peers? Then, the upcoming Student Elections could be the perfect opportunity for you. Whether you’re an experienced leader or just someone with a strong vision, standing in the elections could be your chance to create real change.

What are the Student Elections?

The Student Elections are your opportunity to run for one of several key leadership roles within the Guild. This includes roles like President of the Guild, Education Officer, Living Officer and other Officer roles that lead key initiatives and advocate for change on campus. It’s your chance to have a say in the decisions that impact all students. Could you lead?

Why should you stand?

Here’s why you should seriously consider nominating yourself:

1. Make a difference

Your voice matters. Running for a leadership role means you have the power to bring about real change. You’ll be able to influence decisions, address issues that are important to you and your peers and work towards positive changes within the student community.

2. Develop your skills
Standing for a leadership role isn't just about leading; it's a huge opportunity to develop valuable skills like communication, project management and strategic thinking. These are skills that will set you up for future success. Plus, you’ll gain experience that will make your CV stand out.

3. Be part of something bigger
When you stand in the elections, you join a community of motivated and passionate students who are all working toward creating a better university experience for everyone. You’re not alone in your journey as you’ll be supported by fellow students who share your drive. This is your chance to turn ideas into reality.

4. Influence campus life
From improving student welfare to tackling sustainability, you could be the one to bring about important changes that impact thousands of students. The Guild is a powerful platform for voicing concerns and introducing new ideas.

But what if I’m not sure? What if I’m not experienced enough?

We get it – running for elections can feel daunting. It’s perfectly normal to feel hesitant, but don’t let that hold you back! If you are passionate about making a difference, that’s all you need. Running for the Student Elections is about bringing fresh ideas, passion and a willingness to learn.

Here’s how to tackle common concerns:

“I don’t have experience in leadership roles”
No problem! Everyone starts somewhere. What’s more important is your dedication to making a change. You’ll gain experience and support along the way.
“I’m too busy with studies to take this on”
This is a full-time, paid position (£26k+ salary!) where you’ll need to take a year out of your studies (a sabbatical). But don’t worry—the University fully supports this, and it’s an incredible experience that will set you apart from the crowd!
"I’m not sure I can win"
You won’t know until you try! Elections are about connecting with students and sharing your vision. Even just running can help amplify important issues.
