It is easy to become caught up with our deadlines, learning and other responsibilities, but this can often be at the expense of our own personal wellbeing. While we can recognise the importance of our studies, it is important not to overlook the value of self care. It is entirely okay to take a step back when needed, put yourself first, and look after not just your grades this term, but your body and mind too.
What is self-care?
Self-care refers to the practice of prioritising your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. For us to feel and perform our best, we should look to incorporate self-care into our lives when we can and not treat it as a luxury. Self-care helps you feel rested and restore your energy, boosting mental health as a result. It is a chance to focus on your personal needs away from whatever responsibilities you may be juggling.
Self care will look different for everyone as it should be a commitment to your own personal needs and health. It is flexible as it doesn’t need to take up much time and can vary from day to day.
Tips to prioritise YOU alongside your studies
- Nourish your body with exercise. Dedicating some time to going on a run or walk helps us to be active whilst also engaging with nature. Another cost friendly way to exercise is yoga (there are some great teachers online who post free routines) and the same goes for practicing meditation.
- Write a gratitude journal. This s a great way to actively practice having a positive mindset, benefitting your emotional wellbeing.
- Taking care of your hygiene. Having a bath or doing some skincare, is good for making us feel confident in ourselves.
- Socialise. Although self care is a personal task, that doesn't mean you can’t be sociable. Connecting and talking to friends is a great way to nourish your mental wellbeing.
- Digital detox. Spending time with friends all day or online in group chats can feel draining. Why not trying putting your phone on do not disturb, and practicing a hobby you like or take the time to try something new?
It is important not to feel guilty for dedicating time to your self care. Taking a step back and focusing on yourself is a great way to avoid academic and social burn out. Ultimately, self care is a great way to practice self love, and whatever unique way you choose, we should collectively all aim to put ourselves first a bit more from now on.
