If you’re staying in Exeter over the summer break, you’re in for a treat! Exeter and its surroundings offer a wealth of activities to enjoy, whether you’re looking to relax, explore or earn some extra cash. As an international student myself who has spent just under two years living in Exeter, here are some great ways I’d recommend occupying your time this summer in our beautiful city.
Hit the beaches
Nothing says summer like a day at the beach, and Exeter's convenient location near stunning coastal spots is one of the city's highlights. Dawlish, known for its sandy beach and charming town, is perfect for a relaxing day by the sea, with plenty of food options for you. Exmouth, with its long stretch of sand and water sports, is ideal for a fun-filled day in the sun and a classic destination for Exeter students. Blackpool Sands offers a picturesque setting for swimming and sunbathing, while Sidmouth's pebbly beach and unique shops and eateries provide a delightful escape. For a bigger adventure, consider a daytrip to Cornwall to explore its renowned beaches and coastal villages.
Join Give it a Go Events
The Guild's "Give It a Go" events are a fantastic way to try new activities and meet new people. These events, running throughout the summer, offer affordable or even free activities and trips. Stay updated by following the Guild on Fixr and Instagram to get notifications when new events are posted.
Day trips at the quay
The Exeter Quay is a lovely spot for a day out, offering a variety of activities to enjoy. Relax at one of the many cafes along the waterfront for coffee or brunch, pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely day by the river, or take a long walk along the scenic paths. If you're into running, the Quay offers beautiful routes, especially enjoyable in warm weather.
Get a summer part time job
Why not use the summer to save up some money? Many stores in Exeter are gearing up for the tourist season and are likely hiring seasonal workers. Check out job openings on Handshake, Indeed.com or pop into your favourite stores to ask if they’re hiring. This is something I would 100% recommend to everyone who is staying in Exeter over the break and has some extra time on their hands.
Travel to neighbouring towns
Exeter's excellent transport links make it easy to explore neighbouring towns and cities. Bristol, a vibrant city known for its shopping, dining, and cultural attractions, is just a short trip away. Bath, famous for its Roman baths and stunning Georgian architecture (and filming locations for Bridgerton fans) makes for a perfect day trip. There is an endless list of areas you can visit for fun, including London and the rest of the country. Use Trainline or National Express to plan your trips and enjoy a change of scenery. For any other international students like myself, there is no better time to explore the UK than during summer when you’re not weighed down by deadlines and the pressures of exams!
Explore local cafes and restaurants
Exeter boasts a diverse array of cafes and restaurants, perfect for culinary exploration. Discover new favourite spots for coffee and pastries at the sweet cafes spread out around the city. Keep a list of the places you visit and share your recommendations with friends when they return after the summer break, turning your adventures into valuable insights for others.
Check out what's happening in Exeter

- Exeter Street Food Festival
- Woofstock Festival 2024
