Paws and Relax: How therapy dogs like Tea Cup and Billy can brighten your day

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, missing home or needing a little love? Meet Tea Cup and Billy, the therapy dogs who are trained to help boost your mood, ease your mind, and bring a little joy into your life.

Hi there! I’m Tea Cup!

I’m a 4-year-old Maremma (that’s Italian for sheepdog royalty) weighing in at a regal 31kg. My absolute favourite things? Snoozing, standing guard, and soaking up all the cuddles I can get. Smoked salmon is my ultimate treat—nothing beats it! My go-to walks are along the river or by the sea; the waves are so calming and I like sniffing that salty air.

Now, I have a cheeky side too. I love surprising my humans by jumping up and giving them a big bear hug from behind. They call it cheeky; I call it love! I’ve been a therapy dog for a year now, and it’s the best job ever—I get to meet so many wonderful people and help brighten their day.

Fair warning: I shed furlike it’s my job (which it kind of is—helping birds with nesting material, anyone?). Big dogs can make me a little nervous, but I’m just a big softie at heart. Follow my adventures on Instagram @_teacuptime_. Come say hi!

Hey! I’m Billy!

I’m a 20-month-old bundle of joy, mostly Labrador with a hint of Border Collie, and I weigh a healthy 22kg. Food is life, but blueberries? They’re on another level. I’m not a huge fan of swimming, but I do enjoy a good paddle now and then—sandy beaches are my happy place.

I’m a total people person and get along with all dogs. My favourite trick? Flashing my puppy-dog eyes to score extra treats. Works every time! Oh, and I adore a good game of chase, especially with kids—it’s endless fun.

When I’m not charming humans or playing, you’ll find me cuddling with my squeaky puffin toy. It’s my absolute favourite. I’m on the smaller side for my breed mix, but I’m full of love and energy. Let’s play sometime!

Why you should come meet therapy dogs?

Meeting therapy dogs like Tea Cup and Billy is more than just a fun experience—it’s an opportunity to boost your mental and emotional wellbeing. Here’s why you should take a moment to meet these furry friends:

1 - Stress relief: Therapy dogs have a special way of melting away stress. A quick cuddle or a simple pat on the head can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) levels and leave you feeling calmer and more relaxed.

2 - Mood boost: Ever feel instantly happier when you see a wagging tail? Therapy dogs are natural mood lifters, spreading joy and positivity wherever they go. They’re the ultimate feel-good companions.

3 - Connection and comfort: Being away from home can be tough, and therapy dogs are here to provide that sense of warmth and connection. Whether it’s a cuddle or just sitting quietly with them, they create a safe space where you can just be yourself.

4 - Social ice breakers: Not only do therapy dogs help ease anxiety, but they’re also amazing conversation starters. Whether you're shy or just need a little nudge to meet new people, spending time with these dogs can help you connect with others who share your love for animals.

5 - Mindfulness in action: Dogs live in the moment, and spending time with them can help you do the same. Forget about that assignment for a while, take a deep breath, and enjoy the simple joy of being around these loyal, loving companions.

6 - Health benefits: Research shows that interacting with dogs can lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and even release oxytocin, the "bonding hormone." It’s a science-backed way to improve both physical and mental health.

So why wait? Tea Cup and Billy can’t wait to meet you, brighten your day, and remind you that sometimes, a little love and a wagging tail are the best medicine. Come along, de-stress and make a new furry friend! Book a space at the next Pets as Therapy session.
